Biography: Frederic Remington was born in 1861 in Canton, New York. He died in 1909 at the age of 48 in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Remington was related to George Catlin, famous for his paintings of the American Indian. He studied art at Yale University for two years, where he also played for the football team and was school champion in boxing. After a sojourn to Kansas, where he failed in a sheep ranching venture, he returned to New York to study art at the Art Students League. His reputation was built as an illustrator for magazines such as Collier's and Harper's. While his fame is as an artist of the American West, other than his trip to Kansas, he traveled out west only twice on trips of several months. During the Spanish-American War, he created illustrations of Teddy Roosevelt's Roughriders and the charge up San Juan Hill. He died prematurely from an attack of appendicitis, perhaps complicated by his obesity (5'9" tall, but weighing over 300 pounds). Other noted Western painters and Cowboy artists include Charles Russell, Frank Johnson, and William Leigh. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
