Biography: Norman Rockwell was born in 1894 in New York City. He died in 1978 at the age of 84 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He began studying at the Chase Art School at age 16, then at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. He went on to have a brilliant career as a book and magazine illustrator, including creating cover designs for Boys' Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Life Magazine, Look Magazine, and other magazines and publications. He went on to design 321 covers for the Post. He served in the army during World War I as a military artist. In 1939 he moved to Arlington, Vermont, which inspired many of his later illustrations of rural and small town American life. During World War II, he helped promote war bonds with his patriotic series, the Four Freedoms. During his life, he also painted the portraits of four presidents, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, as well as many other well known world leaders. Other well-known illustrators include Thomas Nast, Newell Convers Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Jesse Wilcox Smith, Eugene Iverd, and James Montgomery Flagg.
