Biography: Auguste Rodin was born in 1840 to a working class family in Paris, France. He died in 1917 from influenza. He was rejected three times for admission to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, possibly due to his having studied at the less prestigious Ecole Imperiale de Dessin (Imperial School of Dessin), which was a crafts rather than a fine arts school. After being rejected by the Paris Salon, Rodin travelled to Brussels, Belgium, in 1870, as an assistant to the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse in decorating the Belgian Stock Exchange. He stayed in Brussels for seven years. In 1880, the Ministry of Fine Arts commissioned his Gates of Hell, the first sign of his future success. In 1883, Rodin met the 19-year old sculptress Camille Claudel, who became his student, assistant, model, and mistress.
