Romanticism Paintings & Artworks

Romanticism was a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement from the latter 18th century to the early 19th century, coinciding with the beginnings of the Industrial Era and the Age of Enlightenment, and the transition from the divine right of kings to popular sovereignty. While Neo-Classicism hearkened back to Poussin, the Romantic style in painting hearkened back to Peter Paul Rubens. Some of the more notable Romantic painters and artists included Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), Francisco Goya (1746-1828), William Blake (1757-1827), Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), John Constable (1776-1837), Theodore Gericault (1791-1824), Francesco Hayez (1791-1882), Ary Scheffer (1795-1858), Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863), Eugene Fromentin (1820-1876), and Gustav Dore (1832-1883).

J.M.W. (Joseph Mallard William) Turner was born in 1775 in London, England. He died at the age of 76 in 1851, also in London. In 1789, at the age of 15, he entered the the Royal Academy of Art, where Sir Joshua Reynolds was one of the instructors. He traveled widely in Europe, visiting Paris, studying the master painters in the Louvre, Venice, Switzerland, and other places which provided inspiration for his art. Turner's atmospheric landscapes and seascapes mark him out as belonging to the Romantic movement, but also prefigure more modern art movements, from Impressionism (due to his focus on light) to Abstract Expressionism (due to his emphasis on expressive design over representation). The English landscape painter, John Constable was born a year later than Turner and was at the Royal Academy of Art at the same time, although they never became friends). [More...]
