Biography: Dante Gabriel Rossetti was born in 1828 in London, England. He died in 1883 at the age of 53 in Kent, England. Rossetti was gifted both in literature and the visual arts, aspiring to be a poet as well as a painter. He studied art under Ford Maddox Brown. Rossetti was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. The Pre-Raphaelites rejected the academic painting of the Royal Academy of Arts, which they saw as a form of mannerism. Instead, they extolled the painters from before Raphael and Michelangelo, especially Sandro Botticelli, hearkening back to the Medievalism of the Early Renaissance. Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth Siddal, who was a painter in her own right, exemplified the romantic ideal of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, posing for Rossetti's paintings of Dante's Beatrice, for instance. She died young, following a still-birth, which some have attributed to the after-effects of posing in chilly water for Millais' Ophelia, although an overdose of laudanum is also implicated.
