Biography: Charles Marion Russell, also known as C.M. Russell, was born in 1864 in Oak Hill, Missouri. He died in 1926 at the age of 62 in Great Falls, Montana. Although he had drawn and sketched since he was a child, Russell was a self-taught artist. He went out west in 1882 at the age of 18, where he worked on sheep and cattle ranches in Montana. He lived in Montana for the rest of his adult life, in contrast to his fellow Western artist, Frederic Remington, who occasionally took trips out west, but primarily lived and worked in the east. Russell first came to notice as an artist while he was working as a cowboy on the O-H ranch in central Montana, when a watercolor he'd painted was displayed in a shop window in Helena, Montana, after which other sales and commissions were to follow. Russell was almost a recluse, with his wife Nancy being a crucial player in helping to establish his successful career by arranging all of his showings and exhibitions. Russell is also known for being a sculptor, creating many bronze scuptures, reproductions of which continue to sell widely to this day. Some other noted Western painters and Cowboy artists include George Catlin, Frank Johnson, and William Leigh. Check out our
