Biography: John Singer Sargent was born in 1856 in Florence, Italy, to American parents. He died in 1925 at the age of 69 in London, England. Sargent's father was a physician. He and Sargent's mother had left the United States for Europe in 1854, becoming expatriots. Studying art initially at the Academie di Belle Arti in Florence, Sargent later entered the atelier of the portraitist Charles Carolus-Duran in Paris. Among the influences Sargent received through Carolus-Duran were Sir Anthony Van Dyke, Diego Velasquez, and other traditional masters of painterly skill. In 1876 Sargent met Claude Monet, whose influence can be seen in Sargent's watercolor landscapes. His success as an artist, however, was built on commissions for portraits from European high society. However, Sargent's most famous painting, Portrait of Madame X, caused a scandal at the 1884 Paris Salon, due to the unconventionality and suggestiveness of her pose, but also perhaps partly due to the obvious stylistic influence of Edouard Manet, who had scandalized the Salon previously. The uproar led Sargent to move to London, where he was to live the rest of his life. Check out our
