Still Lifes have been painted all they way back to the Classical period (with still lifes found depicted on the walls of Pompei, for instance). In the Middle Ages they often had religious, allegorical, or symbolical meanings. From the Rennaisance on, still lifes were often a way for the titled or rich to display their wealth. In general, still lifes are thought of as picturing objects only, but many figurative or representational paintings have included still life elements. The term itself comes from the French, nature morte, with it being a favorite genre of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters.
