Biography: Titian Vecelli (or Vecellio), better known simply as Titian, was born around 1485 in the commune of Pieve di Cadore, about 100 kilometers north of Venice. He died in 1576 in Venice, around the age of 90. Around 10 or 12, Titian apprenticed to Giovanni Bellini, who was the leading painter in Venice at the time. Also apprenticing to Bellini at the time was Giorgione, for whom Titian later worked as an assistant. His earlier work is known for its daring use of color, which he tended to mute in his later years. He spent the last 25 years with King Phillip II of Spain as his patron. About the same age as Michelangelo and Raphael, he lived to influence Peter Paul Rubens and the Baroque art movement. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
