Biography: Utagawa Toyokuni was born in 1769 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and died in 1825, also in Edo, aged 57. He apprenticed under Utagawa Toyoharu. One of his fellow students was Utagawa Toyohiro, who was later to be the teacher of Hiroshige. Toyokuni was best known for his portraits of Kabuki actors, but also created prints of beautiful women (or Bijinga). He is often compared with Toshusai Sharaku, who also specialized in Kabuki portraits. Toyokuni was by far the more successful, although some consider Sharaku to be the greater artist. Toyokuni's most noted pupils were Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Check out our
