Biography: J.M.W. (Joseph Mallard William) Turner was born in 1775 in London, England. He died at the age of 76 in 1851 in London. Turner showed a talent for art early. In 1789, at the age of 15, he entered the the Royal Academy of Art, where Sir Joshua Reynolds was one of the instructors. Working in both oils and watercolor, Turner exhibited at the academy yearly from 1796, when he was 21, until his death. He traveled widely in Europe, visiting Paris, studying the master painters in the Louvre, Venice, Switzerland, and other places which provided inspiration for his art. Turner's atmospheric landscapes and seascapes mark him out as belonging to the Romantic movement, but also prefigure more modern art, from Impressionism (due to his focus on light) to Abstract Expressionism (due to his emphasis on expressive design over representation). Other English landscape painters who were contemporaneous with Turner include John Constable (born a year later than Turner and at the Royal Academy of Art at the same time, although they never became friends), Thomas Girtin, and John Cotman. Turner, of an irrascible character and prone to bouts of depression, did not make friends easily. He never married, although he had two daughters who were born out of wedlock. Check out our
