Biography:Kitagawa Utamaro was born about 1753 in Edo, Kyoto, or Osaka (no one is sure which). While still a child, he became a pupil of the painter Toriyama Sekien, who some believe was Utamaro's father. Utamaro is best known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints of portraits of courtesans from the Yoshiwara district, a red light district, in Edo (modern day Tokyo). He also created shunga, or erotic, prints. Utamaro died in 1806, around the age of 53. Utamaro was the first Ukiyo-e artist to achieve a national reputation in Japan. In the 19th century, examples of his prints reached France, where they influenced the Impressionists.
