Kitigawa Utamaro, Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodcut Artist: Mother and Daughter Biography:Kitagawa Utamaro was born about 1753 in Edo, Kyoto, or Osaka (no one is sure which). While still a child, he became a pupil of the painter Toriyama Sekien, who some believe was Utamaro's father. Utamaro is best known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints of portraits of courtesans from the Yoshiwara district, a red light district, in Edo (modern day Tokyo). He also created shunga, or erotic, prints. Utamaro died in 1806, around the age of 53. Utamaro was the first Ukiyo-e artist to achieve a national reputation in Japan. In the 19th century, examples of his prints reached France, where they influenced the Impressionists. Utamaro created over 2,000 prints during his career, as well as paintings, illustrated books, and numerous shunga, or erotic, books. Check out our Custom Framing options!
