Biography: Diego Velázquez was born as Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez in 1599 in Seville, Spain. He died in 1660 at the age of 61. He was the descendant, through his father, of Portuguese Jews who had converted to Catholicism ('conversos'). He studied painting under the Spanish painter Francisco Herrera and Francisco Pacheco. In 1623, Velazquez was appointed as court painter to Philip the IV, King of Spain, taking up residence in Madrid, where he lived the rest of his life. He painted many portraits of the king, royal family, and courtiers. His paintings are noted for their honest, non-idealized, and realistic depictions. He generally is included in the Baroque school of painting, but also anticipates the later development of Realism. Among the artists influenced by Velazquez were Francisco de Goya, Gustave Courbet, and Edouard Manet, who called him the "painter of painters."
