Biography: Adolf Hohenstein was born in 1854 to German parents in St. Petersburg, Russia. His father was a forest engineer, who worked throughout Europe and moved his family from St. Petersburg to Vienna, Austria, after Adolf was born. After studying art in Vienna, Hohenstein moved to Milan, Italy, in 1879. In the 1880s, he began designing stage sets and costumes at La Scala and other theatres, primarily for grand operas by Puccinni and other composers, which led to his designing opera and other posters for the Ricordi publishing house in Milan (which also published music scores). Designers who worked under Hohenstein at Ricordi included Marcello Dudovich, Achille Mauzan, and Leopoldo Metlicovitz. He died in 1928 at the age of 72 in Milan, Italy.
