While not as abundant as in Europe, and especially in France, there were a few examples of fine poster design in America around the turn of the 19th Century, including Frederick Winthrop Ramsdell and Evelyn Cary. By and large, however, the poster was seem mostly as a vehicle for advertising and promotion relative to which design took a decided backseat to utility. While the American patriotic poster designs created during World War I, by artists such as James Montgomery Flagg and Howard Christy, are certainly interesting as Americana, they aren't particularly daring examples of graphic design. examples of purely American poster design are from the 1930s and later, as exemplified by Chesley Bonestell, Leslie Ragan, and Paul Lawler, as long distance vacation travel via train, plane, or boat became more usual. Immigrant European poster artists, such as Sacha Maurer (sometimes mispelled as Mauer), for instance, also brought more of a European design-style with them. More recently, contemporary poster artists such as Kerne Erickson have been creating retro poster designs in a classic vintage-inspired style.
