Vintage British Poster Art didn't develop as early or as rapidly as in Paris and Milan, and was always a good deal more straight-laced, due to Victorianism, than its more flamboyant counterparts across the Channel. Some earlier 19th century British poster designers included the Beggarstaff Brothers (they were actually brothers-in-law) and John Hassall. What really spurred poster design in Britain, however, but also constrained it within conventional boundaries, was the expansion of travel by train in the 20th century, putting popular vacation destinations within reach of the general public via the LNER, GWR, GNR, and LMS railroads, with large-size posters displayed at train stations, designed by artists such as Tom Purvis, Frank Newbould, Fred Taylor, and Norman Wilkinson, advertising golf courses, beach resorts, and other vacation and travel destinations outside of London.
