Spain and Portugal were not the hotbeds for vintage poster creation that France, Italy, and Switzerland were, with most poster artists from the Iberian Peninsula, such as Francisco Tamagno, working abroad prior to the Spanish Civil War. The civil war, which ran from 1936 to 1939, but which was preceded by a political conflict dating back to 1931, stimulated indiginous poster production, largely for propaganda purposes, and mostly on the Republican side. Many of the Spanish posters created during that time were influenced by Constructivism, a design style then current in the Soviet Union, the primary supporter of the Republican side.
