Switzerland has a rich poster history, starting with Theophile Steinlen and Eugene Grasset in the latter part of the 19th century and continuing with Otto Baumberger in the 20th century. Steinlen and Grasset created most of their poster designs in Paris, France, influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and absorbing the great poster tradition inaugerated there by Jules Cheret and other French artists. Other notable Swiss vintage artists included Emil Cardinaux, Hugo Laubi, Burkhard Mangold, Carl Moos, and Ernst Ruprecht. Located in the middle of Europe and speaking four national languages (French, Italian, German, and Rhaeto-Rumantsch), Switzerland was in a unique position to both learn from and inform the poster design traditions of other nations.
