Biography: Edward Penfield was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1866. He died in Beacon, New York, in 1925, due to injuries suffered in a fall the year before. He studied art at the Art Students' League in Manhattan beginning in 1889. After a year studying in Paris, Penfield returned to New York to work as an artist and art editor at Harper's in 1891. From 1893 to 1899, practically every Harper's Monthly poster was designed by Penfield. In 1901, after gaining international recognition for his work, Penfield left Harper's to work as a freelance illustrator and painter, designing posters for several bicycle companies (Orient, Wonder, and Stearns), for instance. He designed posters in support of the war effort during WWI. In 1920-21, he taught design at the Art Students' League.
