Biography: Eugene Grasset was born in 1845 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He died in 1917 in Paris, France. His father was a cabinet maker and scuptor. He initially studied art under Francois Bocion, as did Theophile Steinlen, before going to Zurich to study architecture. He visited Egypt after completing his studies. In 1861, Grasse left Lausanne for Paris, where he worked designing fabrics, tapestries, ceramics, and jewelry. Grassett turned to graphic design in the late 1870s and gained immediate success designing posters. In the 1880s and 1890s he created a number of cover designs for American magazines, including Harper's Magazine and The Century Magazine. Starting at the turn of the Century, he taught design, with Paul Berthon and Augusto Giacometti as students. He is also known for designing the Grasset typeface.
