Biography: Howard Chandler Christy was born in 1873 in Morgan County, Ohio. He died in 1952. He moved to New York City in 1890, to attend the Art Students League, where he studied art under the American Impressionist, William Merritt Chase. Prior to WWI, he was known for magazine and book illustrations.
Today, Christy is best known for the posters he created to help promote the war effort during World War I, including recruitment posters for the Army, Navy, Marines, Army Air Service, and RAF. Other significant WWI poster artists included James Montgomery Flagg and Everett Johnson. Following WWI, he painted portraits and murals.
