Biography: Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born in 1889 in Bordeaux, France. He died in 1962. He studied art at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. A precocious painter, he exhibited in the Paris Salon at the age of 17. He knew and was influenced by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, who was a distant cousin, visiting his studio in Paris. In his portraits and nudes of Parisian women, he invented a new kind of woman, elegant, whispy, and sylphic. He later claimed, "I invented the pin-up." His work as a poster designer was never more than a sideline. In the 1960s, he was curator of the Jacquemart-Andre Museum in Paris, exhibiting the works of Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Berthe Morisot, and Francisco Goya.
