Biography: Joseph Leyendecker was born in 1874 in Germany to parents of Dutch ancestry. He died in 1951. In 1882, when he was eight, his family emigrated to the United States. He initially apprenticed at the age of 15 to J. Mainz & Co., a Chicago engraving company, but also took some art classes at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1896, he won a Century Magazine cover competition, in which Maxfield Parrish placed second, which led to further cover design assignments. He and his brother Frank, also an artist, traveled to Paris in the fall of 1896, where they He studied the Academie Julian in Paris. He is best known for his Arrow Collar Man advertisements and cover designs for the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines.
