Biography: Leslie Ragan was born in 1891 in Woodbine, Iowa, and died in 1972. He studied art at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Art Institute of Chicago, establishing a studio in Chicago. He later taught at the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts and the Art Institute, before moving to New York. He is best known for over 100 posters he designed for the New York Central Railroad, but also designed posters for the South Shore Line, the Empire State Express, 20th Century Limited, and other railways. Little known or regarded in his lifetime, he is now often compared to the master French poster designer, A.M. Cassandre, who also often created posters featuring railroad locomotives.
