Biography: Pierre Commarmond was born in 1897 in Lyon, France, and died in 1982, aged 86. He initially studied art under Karl Cartier, before completing his training at the Galland workshop. He worked designing posters advertising travel to the Pyrenees, Pyla-Sur-Mer, St. Lunaire, Cayeux-Sur-Mer, Aurillac, Villers-Sur-Mer, Le Chateau de Haut-Koenigsbourg, Le Chateau de Nantes, and other tourist travel destinations, as well as the railroads, such as the Chemin de Fer du Nord, that carried travelers to them. During WWII, he worked designing costumes and stage sets for threatre productions. After the war, he became director of the French printing house, Chaix (pronounced "Shecks"), which had been instrumental in the development of the modern lithographic poster in the 1880s and 1890s (the print shop of Jules Cheret had operated as a Chaix branch since 1881).
