Vintage Anchor Line Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a maritime or travel theme. The company was founded in 1855. The Tempest, a sailing vessel fitted out with steam engines, disappeared at sea in 1857 with all hands (but only one passenger onboard) on the return trip of her second voyage. That began a dismal record of losing ships, crew, and passengers at sea: the United States sinking in 1861; the Caledonia stranded and given up for lost (although salvaged) in 1862; the Britannia's captain swept overboard in 1864; the Hibernia sinking in 1868 with a loss of 78 lives; the United Kingdom disappearing in 1869 carrying 80 passengers; the Cambria wrecked in 1870 with a loss of 186 lives; the Dacian wrecked in 1874; the Europa sank in 1878; the Ismailia disappeared in 1879 with 78 passengers; the Anglia sank in 1880; the Macedonian sank in 1881; the Ischia disappeared in 1882 with all aboard; the Castalia and the Galatia were wrecked in 1884; the Utopia sank in a gale with a loss of 574 lives in 1891, the Trinacria was wrecked in 1893; and the Alexandria in 1895. Despite the loss of 17 ships and well over a thousand lives, the Anchor Line continued to expand and prosper, adding the Mediterranean and Indian routes over the years, until it was bought by Cunard Lines in 1911.
