Vintage Hot Air Balloon Posters feature gas balloons, dirigibles, blimps, Zeppelins, and other lighter-than-air airships. The first hot air balloon flight with passengers took place in 1783 in Paris, France. The balloon was designed by the Montgolfier brothers (Joseph-Michel and Jacque-Ettienne). In 1785, Jean-Pierre Blanchard flew a hot air balloon across the English Channel - he was also the first to fly a hot air balloon in America, in 1793. A dirigible is a steerable hot air balloon, using an engine to propel the craft - the first dirigible flew in 1852. Dirigibles were used as bombers and observation craft in WWI. A Zeppelin is a kind of rigid airship that carried passengers between Germany and other parts of the world from before WW1 to the 1930s. Their use was curtailed following the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. The accident was blamed on the use of flammable hydrogen, instead of helium, which could not be obtained from the U.S., due to a military embargo.
