Vintage Basketball Posters are great for decorating recreation rooms, dens, bars, and other places. This gallery of vintage illustrations, advertisements, and magazine covers features classic depictions of basketball play and players, including dribbling, shooting, defending, blocking, passing, rebounding, stealing, etc. The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachussetts. He called basket ball because the players scored by shooting the ball into actual peach baskets at each end of the court, for which one point was awarded. There was no foul shooting - teams were awarded a point if fouled three consecutive times by their opponent. Games had two 15-minute halves, with a five-minute rest period. The first official game, played with nine players to a side, was won by the score of 1-0. Originally, the ball was advanced only be passing, in that dribbling was not allowed, and would have been difficult since an assymetrical football (or rugby ball) was used. Dribbling only became a significant part of the game with the introduction of a round ball. Even so, for some purists, dribbling has remained a highly suspect part of the game. As evidenced in these prints, up until the 1950s, college and professional basketball was generally an all-white affair.
