Vintage Billiards and Pool Posters are great for decorating recreation rooms, dens, bars, and other places. This gallery features vintage illustrations and advertisements, depicting classic images of billiard and snooker games, tables, and balls. Snooker is also called English billiards. Billiards was developed from an earlier lawn game, similar to croquet, very likely in France in the 1500s, but adapted for in-door play, which helps explain the green color of the felt cloth. Hoops and other obstacles were used, instead of pockets. Cues were introduced in the 1600-to-1700s (replacing the use of maces, or "clubs"). Later, the English introduced the use of cue chalk and a rubber cue tip, making it easier to control and add spin to the ball (called "english," as a result).
