Vintage Boxing Posters are great for decorating recreation rooms, dens, bars, and other places. This gallery features vintage advertisements and illustrations depicting boxers, fighters, pugilists, and boxing matches, fights, and bouts. Boxers featured here include heavyweight champions "Gentleman Jim" (or Jack) Corbett, Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis. Boxing matches have been held going back to ancient Greece, and probably much earlier. Several different sets of rules have governed the sport, including Broughton's Rules (1743), London Prize Ring Rules (1838), Marquess of Queensberry Rules (1867). The first two were rules for bareknucle boxing, while the last introduced the use of boxing gloves and the three minute round (with one minute intermissions). Bareknucle fights were banned in England after 1882. Initially there was no limit on the number of rounds in a fight - a bout continued until one fighter was knocked out or could not continue. Later championship fights were shortened to 15 rounds, and still later to 12 rounds.
