Dogs were the first animal to be domesticated by humans, some 15,000 years ago, when humans were hunter-gatherers. Cats were domesticated about 4000 B.C. in Egypt, during the development of the first agricultural civilizations. While they originally served humans, dogs in hunting and guarding, cats in controlling rodents and snakes, today they are primarily household pets whose function is simply to give and receive affection. The AKC officially recognizes 162 breeds of dogs in seven different groups, including Spaniels, Beagles, Terriers, Poodles, and Collies.
