Vintage South (Midi) Railways Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a railway, travel, or French theme. The Chemins de Fer du Midi (South Railways) was formed in 1852 by the Pereire brothers, serving south-east France between the Garonne and the Pyranees. Over the following years, the railway expanded its network, serving Bordeaux, Bayonne, Sete, Narbonne, Perpignan, etc. Of the six major French railways, it was the only one to serve a region without connecting directly with the capital, Paris. In 1909, the railway took the daring step of electrifying its network, at a time when coal-fueled steam engines ruled throughout Europe, an action prompted by the difficulty in obtaining coal supplies due to the distance from its suppliers (it was cheaper to import coal from Great Britain than to ship it through Paris via other railways). In 1934, it merged with the Chemin de Fer du Paris a Orleans to form the Chemin de Fer de Paris a Orleans et du Midi (or Paris to Orleans and the South Railway), or PO-Midi, for short. In 1937, it was absorbed into the SNCF (Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais, or Society of French National Railways). Among well-known vintage artists to have designed posters for this railway are Leonetto Cappiello and Alphonse Mucha.
