The company started in 1863 as the Moroccan Navigation Company (Compagne de Navigation Marocaine), running ships between Marseilles and Casablanca, Marocco. Service was extended to the Levant and the Black Sea by 1874 and to Senegal and French West Africa by 1908, with the name changed to the Packet Navigation Company, Marseilles (Compagne de Navigation Paquet, Marseilles) in 1913. The company lost four ships serving as troopships in WWI. After losing most of its fleet in WWII, the company's failed to fully regain success, as passenger airliners took over from passenger liners in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1970, the company was no longer in the passenger liner business, except in running some cruise ship tours. In 1988, it was taken over by Costa Lines.
