Vintage New York Central Railroad Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a railroad theme. The roots of the New York Central go back to 1831, when the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad began operation, to provide a quicker trip than that afforded through the locks of the Erie Canal. Following expansion, in 1847, it changed its name to the Albany & Skenectady Railroad, which, in 1853, merged with numerous other adjacent newer railroads to form the New York Central Railroad, connecting New York City, Albany, and Buffalo. In 1867, Cornelius Vanderbilt gained control of the NYC, and under his and following leadership the system expanded to include most of the Northeast U.S., including Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and St. Louis. expanding it over the following years. In 1869, Vanderbilt ordered construction of Grand Central Depot, later replaced by Grand Central Terminal in 1913, through which all of the NYC trains ran. In 1968, the NYC and Pennsylvania Railroad merged to form Penn Central, which then filed for bankruptcy in 1970, with Amtrak taking over their passenger rail service and Conrail their freight business. Conrail went bankrupt and was split up in 1999. Leslie Ragan is particularly known for the many posters and artworks he designed for the NYC.
