Vintage African Railroad Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a railroad or travel theme. An early attempt, by the British, to link Cairo and Suez by rail in 1832 was aborted due to pressure from the French, who were planning building the Suez Canal. The first railway in Africa or the Middle East, linking Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, was completed in 1854-56. This became the Egyptian State Railways (or Egyptian National Railway, as it is called today). A stimulus for expansion of Egyptian railroads was the increased demand for cotton during and following the American Civil War. Eventually, routes extended west to Libya and south to Sudan. The Palestine Railway was constructed during and between WWI and WWII, linking Cairo with Palestine and Lebanon, connecting to the Turkish railways in 1940. While the railroads of Egypt and Israel share the same gauge, they are no longer linked today.
The first rail lines in South Africa linked Durban with its port (3km) and Cape Town and Wellington (72km), completed in 1860 and 1862. A national rail network was completed between 1898 and 1910. While a rail line was extended north to Zambia, the "Cape to Cairo" line envisioned by Cecil Rhodes was never realized.
