The first long-distance railway (Calcutta-Benares) was built by the East India Company from 1854 to 1862. OIn 1870, the East Indian Railway (from Calcutta) and the Great India Peninsula Railway (from Bombay) were linked, allowing train travel across the Indian subcontinent. By 1880, India had 9,000 miles of railway lines, emanating from Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. In 1900-07, all Indian railroads were nationalized.
In 1872, the first Japanese railway (Yokohama-Shimbasi) was opened, with British technical and financial assistance. Probably to save money, it was a narrow gauge line (3'6"), which haunts Japan's rail system to this day. Nippon Railway, a private company, opened a line in 1891, followed by Sanyo, Kyushu, Hokkaido, and Kansai Railways. The South Manchuria Railway was founded in 1906, following Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War.
The first section of the Federated Malay States Railway opened in 1885, between Taiping and Port Weld. The Trans-Australian Railway was built in 1912-17, linking Western and South Australia. Work on the Trans-Siberian Railway began in 1891, from both St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, and was completed in 1916.
