Vintage North American Railroad Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a railroad, transportation, or travel theme. The earliest North American passenger railroads were the Baltimore & Ohio railway (1830) and Mohawk & Hudson (1832), which later became the New York Central. Others included the Lake Erie (1841), New Haven & Hartford (1844), Pennsylvania (1846) Railroads. The earliest midwest railroads were the Milwaukee & Mississippi (1851, later the Milwaukee Road, operator of the Hiawatha), Chicago & Rock Island (1852), and Illinois Central (1858) Railroads (Abraham Lincoln was employed by the Illinois Central as a lawyer). The first transcontinental rail line was built by the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads (1869). Other major railroads that followed included the Atchison Topeka & Sante Fe (1873), Northern Pacific (1883), Southern Pacific (1887, taking over the Central Pacific), and Western Pacific (1903).
The first Canadian transcontinental railroads were the Canada Pacific (1885) and the Canadian Northern (1915) Railways. The latter was nationalized into the Canadian National Railway (1918). Construction of the Mexican Railway began under Emperor Maximilian (1864) and was completed under President Lerdo de Tejada (1873). The railroads were nationalized in 1909, as the National Railways of Mexico, Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico (FNM).
