Vintage Swiss Railroad Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a railroad or travel theme.
Switzerland's first internal railway was the Swiss Northern Railway (Zurich-Baden), built in 1847. After plans were drawn for a national Swiss railway network, privatly operated but publicly supported and licensed by the cantons, lines were built serving Basel, Zurich, Geneva, Bern, and Lucerne. Consolidation into three main companies, the Swiss Northeastern Railway, the United Swiss Railways, and the Jura-Simplon Railway, occurred in the 1860s, and control of the railways was switched from the cantons to the federal level in the 1870s. The Gotthard Railway, the first railway across the Alps, was built in 1882, with branch lines to alpine tourist areas after that. The 1900s saw the nationalization of the major railways as the Swiss Federal Railways. By the start of WWII, 77% of Switzerland's railroads were electrified, compared to 5% for the rest of Europe.
