Vintage Royal Mail Line Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a maritime or travel theme. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company was founded in London in 1839. Upon winning the mail contract, it began sailing between Southampton and the West Indies in 1841.
A South American route was added in 1850, to Portugal, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. The company operated two different ships named Alcantara - the first, built in 1914, was sunk in WWI in 1916; a second of that name was built in 1926, serving in WWII as a Armed Merchant Cruiser and troop carrier. When if took over the White Star Line in 1927, it became the largest shipping group in the world. Other destinations at different times included Bermuda, New Orleans, the Mediterannean, New York, and the Pacific Northwest. In 1932, following a financial scandal and liquidation, the company's assets were taken over by Royal Mail Lines, Ltd. In 1965, Furness, Withy & Co. (operators of the Furness Line) took over the company, which quickly faded from view.
