Vintage Surfing Posters have been popular with vintage poster designers. While modern surfing originated on Hawaii, it was also practiced on Tahiti, Samoa, and other Polynesian islands. Surfing on Hawaii was originally done with wooden boards that were much heavier and longer than currently used boards. The most famous Hawaiin "long board" surfer was Duke Kahanamoku, born in 1890. He is credited with spreading surfing to Australia. His favorite board was 16 feet long and weighed 114 lbs. Earlier Hawaiins surfed on boards as long as 30 feet. In the 1960s, the "short board" was developed. Made of shaped polyurethane or fiberglass and measuring 6 to 7 feet in length, it allowed quicker maneuvers and tighter turns on the waves. Modern long boards are from 8 to 14 feet or longer and provide more stable platforms, allowing tricks like "hang-fives" and "hang-tens". From surfing has sprouted two other popular sports, skateboarding and snowboarding.
