Vintage Transatlantique Posters are a great way to decorate your living space in a maritime or travel theme. The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (or Cie. Gle. Transatlantique) originated as the Compagnie Generale Maritime in 1855. In 1861, as the company came to focus more on transit across the Atlantic Ocean, its name was changed, substituting Transatlantique for Maritime. Overseas it was known as simply "The French Line". The company operated both passenger liner and freight shipping fleets. It received an annual subsidy for providing passenger and mail service across the Atlantic, between Le Havre and New York, with stops at Brest, Saint-Nazaire, and the Isthmus of Panama. The line's flag ship was the SS Normandie, which at the time of its introduction in 1935 was the largest passenger liner afloat. Her main rival was the RMS Queen Mary of Great Britain's Cunard Line. In 1942, after having been seized by U.S. authorities and renamed as the USS Lafayette, she caught fire and sank in New York while being converted into a troopship. Although raised, restoration was deemed too expensive and she was scrapped in 1946.
