The company was formed in 1921 from three ships of the failed United States Mail Steamship Company. Two of the ships, SS America and SS George Washington, were originally German-built and had been seized as reparations following WWI. They ran the New York-Bremen route, with the third ship on the New York-London route. In 1923, the 52,000-ton Leviathan, then one of the largest liners in the world, was purchased. In 1940, the 33,000-ton SS America was built as the company's flag ship. During WWII, several of the company's ships operated as troopships. The SS United States entered service in 1952 - she is the largest ocean liner ever built in the United States and the fastest ever built in the world. and remained the company's flagship until she was sold to Chandris Line in 1969. She is currently docked in Philadelphia and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
