Man from the ForestBiography: The Stenberg Brothers, Vladimir and Georgii, were a Russian poster design team who designed posters during the Soviet era. Vladimir was born in 1899, and Georgii in 1900, in Moscow. Both died in Moscow, Vladimir in 1982 and Georgii in 1933 (in a motorcycle accident). Their parents were of Scandinavian heritage. They initially studied art at the Stroganov School in Moscow, then at the Svomas free studios. Coming of age at the time of the Russian Revolution, they were instrumental in founding the
Screaming TrainConstructivist art movement, creating posters advertising Eisenstein's films and other subjects. Constructivism emphasized the notion of the artist as constructor, assembling existing and found materials, as against the "bourgeois" notion of the artist as creator, expressing his individual inspiration. Besides designing posters, they were also active as theatre and costume designers. Constructivism was influenced by Cubism, Futurism, and Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism, while influencing the Bauhaus and de Stijl art movements.
