Biography: Tom Purvis was born in 1888, the son of the marine painter, T.G. Purvis. He studied art at Camberwell School of Art, and later studied with Walter Sickert and Edgar Degas. His independent career as a poster artist dated from 1906, with a commission from Dewar's Whiskey. Many other commissions were to follow, most notably from the LNER Railway. During the First World War, Purvis served with the Artists Rifles until he was wounded. His early influences included the Beggarstaff Brothers and Ludwig Hohlwein. Among British poster designers, he is clearly the most influenced by continental design trends. During the Second World War, he worked as an artist for the Ministry of Supply. After the war, he quit designing posters to concentrate on painting portraits. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
