Jean Antoine Watteau, French Rococo Painter: Nymph and Satyr Biography: Jean Antoine Watteau was born in 1684 in Valenciennes, France. He died in 1721, at the young age of 36. His father was a master tiler. After briefly apprenticing to a local painter, he left for Paris around 1702, where he joined the workshop at Pont Notre Dame, and later worked as an assistant to the painter Claude Gillot. In 1712, Watteau was accepted as a full member of the Academy, delivering as his "reception piece" his masterpiece, Embarkation for Cythera five years later. Watteau is a precursor of the Rococo style of painting, while hearkening back to the Baroque style of Peter Paul Rubens. Although his style reflects an aristocratic elegance, his patrons were generally from the middle class, including bankers, dealers, traders, and so on. Although often depicting comedians, entertainers, musicians, lovers, and festive gatherings, his paintings breathe a wistfully melancholic spirit, likely in anticipation of his early death, almost certainly from tuberculosis, at the age of 36.
