James Abbott Mcneill Whistler, American 19th Century Painter: Portrait of Miss Alexander Biography: James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in 1834 in Lowell, Massachussetts. He died in 1903 in London, England, aged 69. His father was a prominent engineer. After his father was hired to help build the Russian railroads in 1842, Whistler studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, starting at the age of 11, while also spending some time with relatives in London. when his father died of cholera at age 49, the family returned to his mother's home town, Pomfret, Connecticut. After attending West Point for three years, he was dismissed for poor grades and a bad attitude. Lasting only two months on a job at the U.S. Coast Survey, he did learn etching there. In 1855, with help from a patron, he left for Paris, never to return to the U.S. again. He studied for a short while at the Ecole Imperiale and with the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre, who also numbered Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley among his students. In 1858, he met Henri Fantin-Latour, who introduced him to circle of Gustav Courbet, which also included Edouard Manet. After moving to London in 1858, although frequently visiting Paris, he exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy. In 1871, he painted his most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother or "Whistler's Mother" for short. Custom Framing options!
