Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Printmaker: Le quartier de Nakasu Biography: Tsukioka (Taiso) Yoshitoshi was born in 1839 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and died in 1892, aged 53 or 54. He is considered by many to be the last great ukiyo-e woodblock master, breathing new life into an art form that had stagnated since the days of Hiroshige, who was some 43 years his senior. In Yoshitoshi, the art form shined forth brilliantly one last time. Yoshitoshi's father was a wealthy merchant who had bought into samurai status. He was apprenticed to the ukiyo-e master, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, from whom he took the "yoshi" that starts his own professional name. Through Kuniyoshi, who believed in drawing from life, he was introduced to western drawing techniques and the use of perspective. Born into the feudal Japan of the samurai era, he lived to see the era of the Meiji Restoration and the eradication of the privileges of the samurai class, which led, due to its long-standing ties to that class and the aristocratic culture it fostered, to the decline and virtual disappearance of the ukiyo-e art form, as a new industrialized and middle-class Japan emerged. Plagued by mental illness and depression, Yoshitoshi lived in poverty during the latter part of his life. One story tells of him having to burn the floor boards of his house to stay warm and selling his mistress' clothes in order to eat. Check out our Custom Framing options!
