Skid Road: An Informal Portrait of Seattle
by Kathy Hogan, with Lucy Hart and Klancy de Nevers (editors) / Paperback / Published 1999. Price: $18.95. This book is truly a gem. Kathy Hogan is the most improbable of characters and really the star of this book. It is a collection of columns she penned for the Grays Harbor Post, a weekly newspaper, during the war years. Cohassett Beach is located just south of Westport. While Hogan does provide some passing references to the various depredations of and humorous assaults on local decorum perpetrated by the large contingent of soldiers that was stationed there during the war (ready to battle the Japanese as they came over the dunes), she pretty much ignores the course of the war entirely, preferring to focus on the local doings and characters.
