Biography: A.M. (Adolphe Mouron) Cassandre was born in 1901 to French parents in Khartov, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He died in 1968 in Paris. Born to French parents, he moved with his family to Paris at an early age. Cassandre studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris. Capitalizing on his success as a poster designer, he set up his own advertising agency. He also designed typefaces and taught graphic design. His designs are noted for their bold composition, with a clear inspiration from 20th century art movements, especially Pablo Picasso and Cubism. During World War II he served in the French army until the collapse of France, after which, with a collapse in the advertising business, he worked creating theatre set designs.
