Biography: Leonetto Cappiello was born in 1875 in Livorno, Italy. He died in 1942 in Cannes, France. His father was a maritime liquidator. Cappiello never attended art school, although he drew from an early age and frequented the circle of artists and painters in Livorno while growing up. He moved to Paris in 1898 where he met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and began working as a poster designer. He also produced drawings and illustrations for journals and magazines and showed his work in various exhibitions, including the Biennial of Venezia and the Triennal of Milano. During the First World War, he returned to Italy where he worked as an interpreter. He became a naturalized French citizen in 1930.
